But talk to me like that,
Like I'm the one you've always known,
And what you think is there,
And what you want is real as stone.
And what if I feel nothing?
So what if, maybe, I don't?
Just speak to me,
Just keep on talking, please,
Keep talking, so I know I'm not alone.
The verse, above, was written after being in the presence of an exhibit of the Second School of Boston Painters at the Danforth Museum, Framingham, Mass in early 2012. Among no other group of artists have I felt as understood (which is why I make my home in Massachusetts).
And though the medium of my work here is song, I'd like to imagine that the principles they taught me of history, naturalism and opinion about my subject come through.
